The Sheikhs Shikhats & B’net Chaabi drop a second single from their debut album. This original composition, based on a traditional Moroccan chaabi song from the 1960s, comes with a music video made by Maël L. Lagadec. The full album will be released in March via Zephyrus Records, followed by a release tour in Belgium and the Netherlands.

 

 

The Sheikhs Shikhats & B’net Chaabi is a colourful and exuberant ensemble led by Laïla Amezian. Through this project, Laïla wants to pay tribute to the shikhats and ghanayats, female singers who fought for freedom of expression in 19th century Morocco through popular ‘chaabi’ songs. 

 

 

The traditional chaabi song from the 1960s tells how migrants feel empowered by the memories of family and loved ones back home. Nowadays, we can sustain these personal links more easily thanks to social networks etc. Nevertheless, this theme remains very topical for frontwoman Laïla Amezian.

 

On March 3 this colourful XL ensemble will release their debut album, from which Complainte Chaabi | Awmaloulou is the second track after Still to Come. The album has been recorded by Vincent De Bast at Jet Studio and MetX, the music video by Maël L. Lagadec and Romain Ferrand at La Fabrique 22A.
